WE ARE invites you to travel overseas to Sri Lanka--this journey will take you on an unforgettable adventure across one of Asia’s most beautiful islands.  Let's embark on an adventure that will expand your culture and help you discover this new landscape in the map land of Sri Lanka.  This adventure will take us all over the Sri Lankan Country  from the lush jungles to the rolling hillsides to the remarkable coast--we will see it all!  We will start off exploring the capital city of Colombo.  We will travel inland to the Dambulla Cave Temples to take in the beauty of this World Heritage Site.  Take in a the vast countryside and breathtaking views as we hike Ella Rock.  Let yourself stand in awe at the feet of giants while we roam the grassy plains of Udawalawe National Park in search of elephants.  Cap off our journey surfing the turquoise waves of Mirissa Bay.  Throughout our adventure we will tap into our creativity with a series of photography workshops led by Ami Vitale.  We will learn how to capture various subjects from the beautiful souls of the people of Sri Lanka to the diverse landscapes we will find ourselves in.

We will immerse ourselves in the vibrant and colorful culture of the country and dive deep into their exotic cuisine, including local dishes like dhal curry, kale mallung, and many more. In appreciation of the destination, we will also give back to the community by collaborating with Selyn and taking part in their Handloom workshop. Selyn utilizes its infinite measures of skill and devotion by engaging the traditional Sri Lankan community of Handloom weavers to bring you products that are handmade from 100% cotton.

Ami Vitale will also lead a workshop in photo journalism to cultivate a deep, intuitive experience that will document every moment of this journey of a lifetime.

The rock towers 160 m over the surrounding plains.  There are more than 80 documented caves in the surrounding area. Major attractions are spread over five caves, which contain statues and paintings. These paintings and statues are related to Gautama Buddha and his life. There are a total of 153 Buddha statues, three statues of Sri Lankan kings and four statues of gods and goddesses.

One of the foundational principles of WE ARE’s mission is the desire to give back to the destinations visited; redefining how we answer the call to travel.  We will be volunteering our time and funds at Selyn, Sri Lanka's only Fair Trade guaranteed Handloom company. Selyn is situated in Colombo, the commercial capital and largest city in Sri Lanka. They utilize bold colored dye and 100% cotton in order to weave apparel and tapestries that not only look pretty, but also benefit the environment and its workers. Plus, Selyn maintains an eco-conscious standard by utilizing their recycled cloth to make jewelry.

Founded in 1991 by Sandra Wanduragala, Selyn started its work with 15 women in the village of Wanduragala in Kurunegala, Sri Lanka. Joined shortly thereafter by her brother, Hilary Wanduragala, Selyn now has nearly 1000 members within its organization. The tradition of the loom takes its roots at the very inception of Sri Lankan history. Today the industry faces decline due to various reasons ranging from the lack of skilled experience, uncompetitive market prices, outdated designs and lack of infrastructure and technology.

Selyn takes on this challenge to revive Sri Lankan heritage and extend its benefits to their rural women and men. Their fundamental values stem from the very foundation of their organization: quality and innovative design. Their dye house gives you all the colors of a rainbow and at their handloom workshops they weave a myriad of fabrics, which become home textiles, garments and toys. We will be attending a workshop at their dye house where we will get to learn the ins-and-outs of their heritage and handloom techniques.
